Welcome to the San Diego Winds
Moving Music Forward
The mission of the San Diego Winds organization is to create an ensemble of the finest available musicians and to expose new audiences, with an emphasis on young people, to excellent wind band music. Through performances, workshops, music camps and scholarships, the San Diego Winds will provide opportunities to young musicians to broaden their musical knowledge and to showcase and improve their talents as they advance to college.
Artistic Excellence
Maestro Gregg I. Hanson, the conductor of the San Diego Winds, is one of the preeminent wind instrument conductors in the world. He has conducted bands in Canada, Mexico, Europe and Asia. He was the first American wind band conductor to conduct a public concert with the People’s Liberation Army Band in China.
His involvement with the San Diego Winds ensemble will only make our music and musicians better, all to reach new ears and young musicians. The power of dynamic, charismatic performances can enrich the quality of lives. Our musicians are committed to reaching deep within themselves to reach the audience.

“I couldn‘t be more delighted with the birth of the San Diego Winds. I support music performance in every way, and to have a professional wind ensemble in San Diego will be a great role model for the countless number of school bands in the region. Only a handful of cities in our country have professional wind ensembles, and we will be one of the fortunate few. Under the administrative eye of Russ Sperling (a recognized educator and administrator), this group has a promising future.“

San Diego Winds Educational Programs
Young People’s Concerts
Modeled after the Leonard Bernstein Young Peoples concerts in New York, the San Diego Winds is proud to bring that tradition to southern California. These programs will provide the opportunity for schoolchildren to attend and to participate in these entertaining, educational and interactive programs.
Traveling Rehearsals
One of the truly unique programs offered by the San Diego Winds is traveling rehearsals or, as we call it: “SD Winds Revealed.” It is not unusual for musical organizations to hold open rehearsals so that students can observe and learn. Unlike the others, which hold their rehearsals in their halls, the San Diego Winds will travel to different schools each week of the concert season and hold their rehearsals on site to encourage student interest and attendance.
Mini-Maestros Program
The San Diego Winds innovative Mini-Maestros program provides mentorship for young people already playing music at their school. Students throughout the county will benefit from the world class musicians of the San Diego Winds visiting them at their schools and providing them with musical guidance. The Mini-Maestros Program will begin this fall. Click here to apply for the Mini-Maestros Program!
Scholarships for Deserving Students
Every year, the San Diego Winds will find students who work hard and are committed to pursuing music in college. Deserving students will receive financial assistance for their continuing education.
