Sierra Johnson, currently serving as the Band Director at Eastlake High School, has spearheaded a remarkable transformation in the school's music program. Under her leadership, Eastlake's marching band achieved a notable third place at the SCSBOA 3A Marching Band Championships, marking a significant milestone in the school's musical journey. Additionally, Sierra's pioneering efforts led to the establishment of a winter percussion program at the Open Class level, setting a new standard for musical achievement within the school community. Sierra's visionary leadership and unwavering dedication have not only redefined the role of music education at Eastlake but have also inspired students to reach new heights of musical proficiency while fostering a strong sense of camaraderie and community.
Sierra's journey in music began at San Diego State University (SDSU), where she graduated with a degree in flute performance under the tutelage of Pamela Martchev. Her musical talents were further recognized when she emerged as a winner of SDSU’s Concerto Competition in 2017, captivating audiences with her performance of Lowell Libermann’s Flute Concerto alongside SDSU’s Wind Symphony. Sierra's pursuit of excellence led her to participate in masterclasses conducted by esteemed flutists such as Sarah Jackson, April Clayton, and Marianne Gedigian, among others. Her professional debut with the San Diego Winds, a distinguished wind ensemble, occurred in June 2023, showcasing her prowess as a flutist on a larger stage. Sierra's musical journey also extends beyond the concert hall, as she has performed with esteemed ensembles including the City Ballet Orchestra, San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus, Moonlight Amphitheater’s pit orchestra, Cuyamaca College Wind Ensemble and Concert Band, and Point Loma Nazarene University’s Concert Band, further cementing her reputation as a versatile musician.
